6.18.10 South Holston River Fly Fishing

It was a good day to be out on the water. It’s just nice to be home again. I had spent last weekend in my hometown with my wife for a baby shower my mom was throwing for us. I will say this we have so many clothes now for our son-to-be he’s going to only get to wear an outfit once until he’s 1 anyways. Now for the fishing.

I started off down river in the morning for a few hours practicing some french nymphing techniques i had adapted for use on the tailwaters. I gave myself a decent stretch of river fished heading downstream with a red thread frenchie nymph and a copperhead. To my suprise most of my fish in the morning came on the red thread frenchie. I’ll have to tie some more of those up. at 11:10 the morning pulse showed up and it was a big one. So I headed up river to get upstream of the pulse and get into some dry fly fishing in the afternoon. For a Friday the river was fairly crowded and it was very hot 92 degrees was the high temps. Sulphurs just poured of in ridiculous numbers up river. I caught quite a few fish with one nicer 14 inch rainbow in the mix.  I had heard Rod remarking about fishing cripples so I dug through the box to find some that I had still in there from last season that were left unfished. The nicer fish came up and hit the Cripple without question as to whether or not it was real. They just ate it. Rene Harrop Last Chance Cripple You’ll want to tie a few of these up to have on hand over the next few months. So all in all it was a pretty good day out on the river. I also gained faith in two more fly patterns which on this river means alot. If you like fishing dry flies there would be no better time in the year to book your trip on the South Holston or the Watauga. Give us a call.

  1. Thanks for the link back, Josh. Glad the frenchie produced for you! It’s amazing how well that simple little fly produces.
